Isaac often watched Emma as she taught her class. She seemed very sweet and kind, but the other women of the village did not accept her.
Emma had noticed Isaac as well, and she often watched him as he worked in the fields outside the schoolhouse, wondering what it would be like to get to know him. But she had no hope of a future with anyone – her past was too great an obstacle.
