It’s almost midnight, bitterly cold and snowing, when a beautiful young girl, Tabitha Willard, throws herself off the Walnut Street Bridge into the icy waters of the Tennessee. Harry Starke is there, on the bridge. Wrong time, wrong place? Maybe. He tries but is unable to stop her. Thus begins a series of events and an investigation that involves a local United States congressman, a senior lady senator from Boston, a local crime boss, several very nasty individuals, sex, extortion, high finance, corruption, and three murders. Harry has to work his way through a web of deceit and corruption until finally…Well, as always, there’s a twist in the tale – several in fact.

I used to love Michael Connelly’s writing, as well as another couple of authors of that generation.
This is written in the same “voice” as Harry Bosch, Jack Reacher and Agent Pendergrast, as well as several other well loved characters, that kept me glued to my reader, episode after episode.
Harry, is a loveable rogue, that gets the bit between his teeth and doesn’t know when to back down. He has a remarkable number of people covering his back. He obviously has cultivated friends and workers, by good deeds and loyalty, for they are willing to go to the wire for him.
Yes, an impressive first episode, let’s see if the next lives up to the same high standard.
Jerry Harkey –
This first book in a series of 12+ is a great introduction to Harry and friends (and enemies!). I was not fond of the narrator and hope he is changed out to someone else in subsequent books as I do plan on continuing with them. Harry is his own biggest fan, but I’m one too now! Recommended for those who enjoy a hard-boiled protagonist who’s good at his job, and with the ladies.
