Cassie is one of 7 kids but the only one born with out magic. She just wants a normal life and to be a normal detective. She gets her first job and is so excited until her and Evan a childhood friend who happened to be there find a body. A dead one. Magic lovers will adore this book. It has an active storyline that holds your interest and characters that are charming. I personally am rooting for the underdog! It has murder and mystery to keep you enthralled and love and discord to play on your emotions. The urge to hug and to throat punch were both strong while reading this book. The narrators voice is smooth and silky and switches effortlessly among the characters in the book. Quite enjoyed the voices she gave all the characters! Ends in a bit of a cliffhanger in the love/relationships department but the the main story is a standalone.

I was a little nonplussed by the YA flavor of our 21-year-old female protagonist, Cassie. The world-building is good with magic as a reality of life and believed by many if not most. Multiple levels and layers to the witches, warlocks and sorcerers, and even evil Vampires, make a potent mix of politics in the Families of Community. It just took me a while to accept the immature heroine and embrace her struggles. And, it had a good enough ending that I will be immediately listening to Book 2!

I have no words to describe how much I like this! Cassie is such a good character, even though she is young and a bit naïve, she didn’t came across as weak. It took me a bit of an effort to realize she was a PI who worked with the police and yet still live with her parents, not that there is anything wrong with it, it’s just that it seemed she was an adult outside her parents house and a teenager when they were around, it was weird. But besides that, the story runs smoothly, the worldbuilding is amazing, the characters likable and I was never bored.

Melissa Reizian Frank was the best choice for this story, in my opinion. Her voice is mature for the Cassie’s age, but I think that made her look older and wiser.

  4. Rosemary HUGHES

She always felt to be less, the only one out of seven children to not have magic.
Then, to be asked to give up their family, so they would have the power of seven practitioners.
He helped her bear it all, although neither of them trusted the other with their hearts.
Tissues will be most likely needed for those that are emotionally involved in a story.
