The Dark Trilogy: Annals of the Nameless Dwarf Books 1-3 “Nameless is a powerful trilogy for so many reasons. A\It builds upon various facets: a fearful community trying to protect themselves from the outside world, poverty, hope, deception and misuse of history. The strongest though is simply in the title. Your name defines you and what you will do. When this is stripped from you, what are you? Stumble into the first three books of this tale of hope and woe and feel each swing of the dreaded ax and the path towards freedom and loss. Mike Carnes's narration of this tale is utterly fantastic in how it captures each character's plight in this epic. It's heartbreaking going through this journey that pivots at points and leaves you breathless. You see the veil lifted and shut back down while you want to know what the next moment will bring. Jump in, strap on your helm and get ready for new path of fantasy.”
The Snake “The Past is Present Again This work bridges worlds, times and cultures. On the surface, it's a murder mystery. On another it's an inquiry into cultures, how they overlap and help and hurt the other and on yet another it's an examination of history and who owns the pieces that represent it. Think Murder She Wrote with a friend like Indiana Jones and you get a bit of a feel for this novel. It's great to hear Carrie Coelle give life to the words of JA Kellman. I really appreciated hearing the descriptions of Tikal and contrasting that with the Midwest. The jumps between time lines and regions is seamless and dreamlike. I wanted to know more and more about all of the places and histories with each chapter.”
Aries 181 “Far more than a Crime Drama, so much more On the surface, this is a look into the megalomaniacal corporate greed in current business. It's easy to fall into the caper aspect but really this is about the state of gender studies in the workplace and victim blaming that is far too prevalent in society. Jump into this parallel pathed story of two women dealing with industrial espionage, staff meeting in fighting and intrigue. As each chapter builds you learn of the ingrained barriers placed on women and the men in their lives that knowingly and unknowingly buy into and encourage this practice. The science here is an entry and could be explained on more detail but the focus is following Jess and Hailey as they learn how to find strength in themselves and those around them to realize that all isn't always as it seems.”
Wretches of the Trench (Part 3) “Everything Changes This third installment of the Tivara Story really brings the concept of family, by birth, choice or circumstance, to the forefront. The traveling party continue to look for those that know of the Black Lotus to keep the secret hidden. This story though really looks at the cost of life. Throughout the first three books, i'd forgotten how young the characters are. It hit home here in this examination of the poorer sections of the world and how bodies and lives are shuffled along for the whims of those in power. There is so much to unpack here all while enjoying the swashbuckling adventures of this collection of assassins. Strap in and get ready for a ride unlike others.”
White Sheep of the Family (Part 2) “Clan, Family, Self How far are you willing to go to protect your clan? your family? yourself? These are three central questions interwoven into this second installment of the Black Lotus collection and the pace of this work is frenetic and purposeful as you uncover the mysteries of the Black Lotus organization along with the characters. JC Kang continues the masterful and concise world building and this is paired with excellent narration matching the wonder and worry. The introduction of new characters really adds to the wonder of this series. With each step along this journey more is learned, lost and gained.”
Eagle Eyes Books 1-3 “Someone's always watching in Vegas Book 1 This is a great short piece of work that builds intrigue and wonder quickly and lets the reader/listener in on the ins and outs of Vegas but not in the normal sense. There's always more than meets than meets the eye and you've got to keep watch. This is a tale of a FBI agent coming to visit her friend and the drama kicks up immediately. Not from drunken debauchery but from vandalism, human trafficking and more. Journey into the tunnels below what you're used to seeing and witness how Liz Brand's brilliant narration captures the charcters with each step, move and twist in this intro into the Julie Gilbert's foray into the underworld of Vegas and the government. Gotta Get into The Club Somehow Book 2 The ever exciting and engaging world as viewed through Eagle Eyes continues in this journey of a determined FBI agent intent on taking down this network of human traffickers and all around evil folks. She dives deeply within this seedy sect but must find a way to trust the voice in her head. Again, the pairing of Liz Brand and Julie C. Gilbert flow together seamlessly to reflect the adventure. Buckle up for a fun ride in the Silver State as the hunt continues. With Eagle Eyes Open Book 3 This third installment of the Eagle Eyes adventures brings even more intrigue to the life of FBI agent Megan Luchek as she delves deeper into the dank recesses of Dallas to help her nemesis turned ally. The plot twists and turns on itself again and again as each layer gets pulled away as she goes deeper into the nationwide network of people. Get ready to experience the masterful narration from Liz Brand as she shows you a world hiding in plain sight.”
Thorn of the Night Blossoms (Book 1) “What Lies Beneath the Surface Jump right into this beautifully rich and intriguing world of deadly courtesans and assassins. For a short work, JC Kang deftly creates a real depth of the characters jumps out and is perfectly shaped with Natalie Naudis' narration. You can feel the need to fit in and break out of the restrictive barriers of the society as a whole while understanding why traditions exist. Sharpen your blades and your wits during this romp through the palace intrigue.”
Realmbound: Sword of the Void (Volume 2) “A Storm is Coming! Rian and his cohorts continue their quest for peace as their enemies have regrouped and seek to steal the souls and power for their own means. This is a great evolution of the saga as each player here learns more about their new normal, their powers and each other. This storytelling is tighter as more characters are introduced and more of the dramatic backstories are unveiled. Twists abound from all corners and get ready to ride along as many sides converge to see who will run the realm. Sean Duregger also tailors his narration with this growth. His voicing of Rian's power takes on more and more confidence with each hurdle lifted as well as the desire for power matches the other characters.”
Never Again “An all true, real piece of fiction The combination of story and narration is spot on in capturing the woes of dating, hope, maniacal thoughts and growth of dating and community. As you go through this short work, you wonder how this will go and can feel yourself wonder and plead for things bro go a certain way. There aren't many voices here but each ring true in their roles and keep you there.”
Anotech Chronicles Book 1: Reshner’s Royal Ranger “This is a really fun run through a blended worlds in a different manner than you're used to with adventure and fantasy. This story sucked me in with its quick pace as the quest begins and highlights the palace intrigue. As we travel the road, we learn about tradition, love and hope with the fear of leadership. The narration is excellent to capture the feeling of the journey and the subtle aspects of each characters' feelings and motivation. As you move through the work, you have to wonder what are you willing to give up for love, your land and life.”
Eagle Eyes Book 3: Danger in Dallas “With Eagle Eyes Open This third installment of the Eagle Eyes adventures brings even more intrigue to the life of FBI agent Megan Luchek as she delves deeper into the dank recesses of Dallas to help her nemesis turned ally. The plot twists and turns on itself again and again as each layer gets pulled away as she goes deeper into the nationwide network of people. Eagle Eyes Book 1: Violence in Vegas “Someone's always watching in Vegas This is a great short piece of work that builds intrigue and wonder quickly and lets the reader/listener in on the ins and outs of Vegas but not in the normal sense. There's always more than meets than meets the eye and you've got to keep watch. This is a tale of a FBI agent coming to visit her friend and the drama kicks up immediately. Elendil “A Revolution of Self This YA novel highlights a lot in a short piece. The identity crisis of being bi-racial, the search for self as you find out more about your past, the rigid structures in place in worlds that control who and how to love, palace intrigue and more. It's shared in the voice of a 17 year old girl going through the pain of growing into herself and learning how to navigate through these rules and traditions. This lays the groundwork for an interstellar revolution that i hope continues to see the growth of this angry, motivated young woman as she comes into her own and sets rights the wrongs done to her by her the nature of her birth. The narration aptly captures the annoying angst of youth and transforms with her as she grows into her she will become. Vengeance is coming! (I hope)”
