Dungeon World 2 “The story focuses mainly on the big event talked about at the end of book 1. Understand that this is not like book 1, and the author very much fleshes out the big battle to take up most of the book. This read reminded me of Justin Miller's "World Seed", where sometimes the mechanics and stats force the story to take a backseat. Sometimes I caught myself thinking "This section about mechanics in interesting, but when are we going to get on with the story?" That being said, hang in there, because Jonathan does wonderful in parts that carry the story for the last half of the book. The narrator does a great job with the read, and I have no issues continuing to listen to him. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.”
Dungeon World: A Dungeon Core Experience “I loved the interesting twist on a recently overdone category. This twist kept my interest for the first half of the book until things got interesting. The main reason I rated the story a "4" was due to the author not picking up the pace fast enough, yet skipping/fast forwarding over the parts that should have been fleshed out a bit more. If you pay attention to the author's note at the end of the book, this is well explained. Book 1 and 2 were originally going to be the same book, but then Jonathan wanted the expand out the origin of the character and separated the two. After listening to book 2 I fully understand this decision, but think a focus on a few skipped parts would have made this feel like more of a complete book. The narrator does well, but falls into the category of 1.25 times speed for me. A common issue I've ran into recently with narrators taking a bit too long to tell the story. I enjoyed the premise and story well enough to quickly grab book 2 and start reading immediately. See you in book 2's review page. Eight-Bit Bastards: A Gamelit LitRPG retro gaming adventure “Step into a digital afterlife hundreds of years after being created. The characters spend most of their time in an rpg section of the afterlife they exist in. I liked the idea that this wasn't another origin story of a vr game, giving a bit of a twist on a typical litrpg. I do feel like the author could have benefited from exploring the world a bit more, though. The world this book focuses on in very interesting, but we only see snapshots of much of it. I would be interested in a prequel to the books, especially if it focused on a different MC. The MC was mostly unlikable and I found myself caring more for the side and support characters. He is too self centered and unapologetic for a person his age, and it just made me not care for his character development. The narrator did a decent job and was glad to hear another person I wouldn't mind reading me stories in the future. He did well in keeping pace and differentiating most of the characters. The few other problems I have with 8 Bit Bastards is the lack of an ending and the sound effects which both seem to jump out at your and are a bit too high volume compared to the narrator. I love myself some litrpg, and I think the concept kept me interested enough to take this book to the end. It is a decent read, but enjoy the journey and don't expect a big conclusion (many loose ends). I received a free review copy and am leaving a voluntary review.”
